both native and wine on the linux box), navigating around easily with my Gravis' d-pad. I actually use steam big picture mode on both (or all 3, depending on how you look at it. which is strange, because all of the above work great with minimal setup (drivers are already in the OS, and it reads buttons/d-pads/analog sticks as what they are) on both my windows 7 gaming PC and my linux mint 17 secure bill-paying (8-year-old old gaming hardware) PC. In every case, SteamOS reads the d-pad as a pair of analog axes, and with the dualshock controllers, the analog sticks register as joystick hat controls. So far I've tried my old Gravis Gamepad Pro (model 4211 Rev 5), a couple of sub-$20 dualshock knockoffs, and an actual PSone dualshock (SCPH-110) controller using a PSXtoUSB adapter. With actual gamepads, I can't navigate at all. Thus, no line break to create paragraphs. but when I hit enter, it acts like I'm hitting an invalid control on a gamepad (pops up instructions at the bottom of the screen). I'm typing this with an Inland model 70142 wireless keyboard/trackball, and it works for the most part. which ties into my main issue: SteamOS (in big picture mode, v159) has a very hard time determining what is plugged into it at any given time. First off, please don't recommend the XBox 360 controller.
